మహారాష్ట్రలో ఒక కుగ్రామంలో ఇద్దరు అక్కచెల్లెల్లు ఉంటారు. మాన్సి (అరుణా ఇరాని ), బన్సిలు. తండ్రి వ్రిందావన్ (రఘువీర్ యాదవ్) స్టేజి నాటకాలు వేయడంతో పూట గడుస్తుంది వాళ్ళకు. ఆయన మంచి గాయకుడు. పిల్లలిద్దరికి స్వయంగా సంగీతం నేర్పిస్తూ ఉంటాడు. పిల్లలూ చక్కగా నేర్చుకొని స్కూలు స్థాయి పోటిల్లో నెగ్గుతూ ఉంటారు. అయితే, అంత చిన్నతనం నుండే వాళ్ళిద్దరి మధ్య ఈర్ష్య ప్రస్ఫుటంగా ఉంటుంది. తల్లి అకాలమరణం, తండ్రి మద్యపానానికి బానిసవ్వటంతో వాళ్ళ బతుకులు దుర్భరమవుతాయి. కొన్నాళ్ళకు తండ్రి కూడా చనిపోవటంతో బొంబాయిలో దూరపు చుట్టాల ఇంట పెరుగుతారు. బి గ్రెడ్ సినిమాల్లో భజనలు పాడుతూ అక్క డబ్బు సంపాదించుకొస్తుంటే చెల్లెలు ఇంటి పని చూసుకుంటూ ఉంటుంది.
అదృష్టం కలిసొచ్చి అక్క పెద్ద బానర్ సినిమాలకు పాడ్డం మొదలెట్టి ఎనలేని ఖ్యాతి గడిస్తుంది. తాను కూడా అలా సంగీతంతో జీవించాలని ఉబలాటపడిన చెల్లి కోరికను కాదని, ఆమెకు పెళ్ళి చేసేస్తుంది అక్క. భర్త పనిచేయకుండా, తాగొచ్చి కొట్టడంతో చెల్లి బ్రతుకు దుర్భరమవుతుంది. విషయం తెల్సుకున్న అక్క ఆ బంధం నుండి వేరు చేస్తుంది. అప్పటికే చెల్లికి ఒక పాప పుడుతుంది. ఇద్దరి తల్లుల మధ్య అల్లారుముద్దుగా పెరుగుతూ ఉంటుంది. ఈ లోపు చెల్లి కూడా బాలీవుడ్ సినిమాలకు పాడ్డం, ఇద్దరి మధ్య ప్రొఫెషన్ రైవల్రీ పెరగటంతో బంధం బీటలువారడం మొదలెడుతుంది.
వారిద్దరి బంధం ఏ లోతుల్ని చూసింది? ఆమె బతుకు ఎన్ని మలుపులు తిరిగింది? ఆమె మరలా పాడగలిగిందా? ఎలా? ఎందుకు? అన్నవి మిగితా కథను నడిపిస్తాయి.
కథనం:
ముందే చెప్పినట్టు, కథాగమనం ముందుకీ, వెనక్కీ జరుగుతూ ఉంటుంది. అయినా, కథలో ఏ మాత్రం అయోమయానికి గానీ, గందరగోళానికి గానీ తావుండదు. గాయానికి కట్టిన బాండేజ్ ఒక్కొక్క పొరా తీస్తుంటే పుండు లోతు మెల్లిమెల్లిగా కళ్ళకు కనబడినట్టు, బన్సీ జీవితంలోని దెబ్బలన్నింటిని చాలా నేర్పుగా తెరకెక్కించారు. ఆమె మనఃపరిస్థితిని, ఆమె ధృడచిత్తాన్ని తెలపకనే తెలిపారు.
సంగీతం – పాటలు:
సినిమా మొత్తం సినీసంగీతం గురించే కావటంతో పాటలకు కొదువ లేదు. ఈ చిత్రానికి జాకిర్ హుస్సేన్, భుపేన్ హజారికే కాకుండా ఇంకొందరు సంగీతాన్ని అందించారు. అన్ని చేతులు పడినా వంటకం మాత్రం బ్రహ్మాండంగా కుదిరింది. ఈ సినిమాకు గానూ జావేద్ అఖ్తర్కు జాతీయ ఉత్తమ గేయరచయిత అవార్డు వరించింది.
పాటలన్నీ ఒక ఎత్తు, “బాదల్ ఘుమడ్ బఢ్ ఆయే” పాట, ఆ పాటను వాడుకున్న సన్నివేశం అమోఘం. ఒక్కసారి చూస్తే జీవితాంతం వెంటాడే సన్నివేశాల్లో అది ఒక్కటి.
“ఇంత గొప్ప కళాకారుడివి. తప్పతాగొచ్చి అర్థరాత్రి ఇతురుల ఇంటి ముందుకొచ్చి గొడవచేస్తూ అడుక్కుంటున్నావా?” అని ఇరుగుపొరుగు విసుక్కున్నప్పుడు, ప్రతిస్పందనగా ఈ పాట పాడ్డం ’హతవిధీ!’ అనిపిస్తుంది.
నాకు నచ్చిన ఇతర అంశాలు:
- నటీనటుల పనితనం. షబానాదే మొత్తం సినిమా అయినా, అరుణా ఇరాణీ తన పాత్రను చాలా బలంగా నిలబెట్టారు. ఇద్దరి మధ్య ఒక వైపు అనురాగం, మరో వైపు వొరోధం. వాటి మధ్య నలుగుతున్న సన్నివేశాల్లో ఇద్దరి నటనా, నువ్వా-నేనా అన్నట్టు సాగుతుంది.
- కథకు సైక్రియాటిస్ట్ ఆంగిల్ ఇవ్వటం. సహజంగా, మన చిత్రాల్లో ఇలాంటి సంఘర్శణాపూరిత ఘటనలను ఎవరో స్నేహితులకో, ఆప్తులకో చెప్పటం చూబిస్తారు గానీ, ఇందులో ఒక ప్రొఫెషన్ సైక్రియాట్రిస్ట్ వద్దకు చికిత్స కోసం వెళ్ళినట్టు చూపటం నాకు బాగా నచ్చింది. షబానా ఒక డైలాగ్ ఉంటుంది; “పూజలూ, వ్రతాలకన్నా ఒక డాక్టర్ మీద నమ్మకం పెట్టుకోవటం మేలు కదా! ఇంకొకరిని నమ్మి మన గతాన్ని వినిపించటం అంత తేలికైన పని కాదు.” అని.
- ఇది మాన్సి కథా? బన్సి కథా? అని తేల్చుకోడానికి లేదు. అంతగా అల్లుకుపోయిన జీవితాలు వాళ్ళవి.
- తన జీవితాన్ని నిలబెట్టిన మనిషే, తనని జీవితంలో పైకి ఎదగకుండా చేస్తున్నప్పుడు ఒకవైపు ఆరాధన, మరోవైపు ద్వేషం పెరిగిపోతూ ఉంటాయి బన్సికి. పనికి సంబంధించిన విషయాలను వ్యక్తిగత విషయాల్లోకి రానివ్వకూడదు అని అక్కచెల్లెల్లిద్దరూ ప్రయత్నిస్తారు గానీ, అది కుదరదు. దానికి డాక్టర్ ఇచ్చే సమాధానం నాకు చాలా నచ్చింది. ఒకే మనిషి పట్ల పరస్పర విరుద్ధ భావాలతో ఎక్కువ కాలం బంధం కొనసాగించటం దాదాపు అసాధ్యమైన పని. బన్సీ అయితే తన అక్కను వదులుకోవాలి, లేకపోతే తన వైభవాన్ని. ఎంత తపస్సు చేసినా, రెండూ ఆమెకు ఎట్టి పరిస్థితుల్లో దొరికేవి కావు.
- జాకిర్ హుస్సేన్ వేసిన పాత్ర భలే నచ్చింది నాకు. Full of life, oozing out charm! కాకపోతే నటించేటప్పుడు, Ustad wasn’t himself అని అనిపించింది. నటన ఇంకా బాగుంటే భలే ఉండనని అనిపించినా, ఆ పాత్ర మనసును దోచుకుంది.
- నటి అరుణా ఇరానీ గెడ్డానికి కందిగింజంత పుట్టమచ్చ ఉంటుంది. అందుకని, ఆమె చేస్తున్న కారెక్టర్ బాల్యాన్ని చూపిస్తున్నప్పుడు, ఆ చిన్నమ్మాయికి కూడా గెడ్డం మీద కూడా అంత పెద్ద మచ్చ పెట్టారు. ఇలాంటివన్నీ చిన్న విషయాలే అయినా, పనిపై ఎంత శ్రద్ధ ఉందని తెలియజెప్పే విషయాలివి.
ఈ సినిమా గురించి ఉన్న చర్చానీయాంశం: ఇది ప్రముఖ గాయనీమణులు, లతా మంగేష్కర్ – ఆశా భోన్సలే జీవితాలను ఆధారంగా తీసుకొని చేసారా? కాదా? అని. సాయి పరాన్జపే “ఎవ్వరినీ ఉద్దేశించినది కాదు.” అని గమనిక పెట్టినా కూడా, అక్కడక్కడా పోలికలను చూడనట్టు ఉండడం కష్టం. రెండుజెళ్ళదేముంది గానీ, లతా ఆశను ఎదగనిచ్చారో లేదో తెలీదు గానీ, చెల్లులికి కేవలం పార్టీ, వాంప్ సాంగ్స్ మాత్రమే రావటం లాంటివి కొంచెం బలంగానే నాటుకుంటాయి.
ఈ సినిమా ఒకవేళ లతా-ఆశ గురించే అయితే, వారిద్దరూ అభినందనీయులే! అంతటి తీవ్ర మనస్పర్థలను అధిగమించి ఈనాటికీ పాడగలుగుతున్నారంటే! కాకపోయినా, మరేం పర్లేదు. ఇదో మంచి చిత్రం. తాను చెప్పాలనుకున్న కథను చెప్పగల సామర్థ్యం ఉన్న కథకురాలు చెప్తుంది. ఆమెకు సాయంగా మంచి నటీనటులు, సాంకేతిక నిపుణులు, సంగీత విద్యాంసులూ ఉన్నారు. అందుకని ఈ చిత్రానికి sensational elements అవసరం లేదు.
సాయి పరాన్జపేగారి సినిమాలు చూసాక, ఆవిడంటే ఎనలేని గౌరవం కలిగింది. కామెడి అయినా, సెటైర్ అయినా, మానసిక సంఘర్షణ అయినా, సున్నితమైన అంశాలైనా ఆవిడ కథలు చెప్పే తీరు నన్ను మెప్పించింది. I’m glad, I found a story teller, a very good one!

I remember that when Saaz was released, Varsha Bhosle, daughter of Asha, took Sai Paranjpye to task in her column in Rediff, dispelling the notion that Saaz was the story of Asha and Latha. I looked for that column and couldn’t find it, but here is another from Varsha about her remarkable mother.

Saaz was good cinema; a well told story with finely etched characters, interesting script, great performances and good music. Raghuvir Yadav belting out baadal ghumad badh aaye while getting soaked in rain and then reminding his neighbor that he earned the money and was not begging for it is a memorable cinematic moment. Loved the way Aruna Irani held her own against Shabana.

సాఈ పరాంజపే అంటే ఆరోగ్యకరమైన వినోదం అని మన్సులో ముద్రపడిపోయింది ఆ రోజుల్లో దూరదర్శన్ పుణ్యమా అని. చాలా మంచి సీరియళ్ళూ సినిమాలు అందించారు. ఐతే సాజ్ సినిమా గురించి నాకు నీ ఆర్టికల్ చూసేంతవరకూ తెలియకపోవడం ఒక విషయమైతే అది చూసి నేను ఈ ఆర్టికల్లో ఆ ఒక్క పేరు తప్ప మిగిలిన విషయాల పై ఎక్కువ ధ్యాస పెట్టలేదని (ఆఖరికి బొమ్మ మీద కూడా) కూడా తెలిసింది. కానీ అది మంచిదే అయ్యింది. ఈ సినిమాలో జాకీర్ హుస్సేన్ నటించినట్టు తెలియదు. నమ్మలేకపోయాను. చూస్తున్నా, అతనే అని తెలుసు కానీ మళ్ళీ సినిమా గురించి వెతికి (credits చూస్తే తెలుసుతుంది కానీ) confirm చేసుకున్నాను. ఆమె సినిమాలు సరదాగానే ఉంటాయనుకున్నాను. కానీ నువ్వు చివర్న వ్రాసింది కూడా గమనించుకోలేదు కదా. ఈ కథ ఇంకెవరైనా తీసినదైతే చూసే దాన్ని కాదేమో. కానీ ఎప్పటికప్పుడు ఆపుదామనుకుంటూనే పూర్తిగా చూస్తూ ఉన్నాను. Glad you watched this movie. How did you like it? I’ve no clue about her serials on DD or her plays in theater. Any inputs will be highly appreciated.
I’ve watched just four of her movies. And I loved each one of it. She had variety, she had a purpose with each of it, and more importantly, she could tell a story, emphatically. Only when I come across such people, that I’m tempted to accept cinema as an alternative form of story telling. Otherwise, cinema is just a time-filler in bored hours or escape mechanism for routine.
Despite her ability to portray complex and highly entangled human relationships, a light comedy like Chasme Baddoor happens to be my favourite. Reason being, it isn’t so simple to be simple! I love very frame and very dialogue of this comedy, for its sheer simplicity.
Well, that was a fan’s unending rant. Do let me know how you liked the movie. And yeah, Zakir Hussain ROCKS.. but let me not get started on that, now. We’ll take that in mails.

Purnima, I watched this movie and it is thanks to your (re)view. I liked watching it. I can understand if the story was inspired from the legendary sisters but I wouldn’t judge those sisters based on this story. Independently, it is an interesting subject and handled well and sensiibly.
DD serials, I remeber her signature (the vowel “ee” especially) and remeber that it was a nice experience wathcing them, subtly humourous stories. Having said that I cannot recollect them by name.I looked up a little but didn’t help. I will dig something up soon, if you don’t do it sooner
In Sowmya and your experiences when you talk about works of that time, or works that were enjoyed more at the time, I get to relive my memories of when I was that age. Interestingly though we differ in a lot of ways and I find you girls wiser and more aware than I was when I was that age, and despite the generation gap, I find some very satisfying similarities.

I saw his live performance just once in Pune (I was told Pune is the place where you can enjoy such performaces the best) and it is a memory I will keep with me for a life time. In this movie, I know he was playing a character and may be not too well. But there was something about him even before I realised it was Zakir Hussain that just draws attention. Zakir Hussain also brings me back memories of enjoying his music as a family with my brothers and sisters.

Couple of years back I didn’t even know that a movie called Chashme Baddoor even exists and given a chance, the movie’s die hard fans were ready to murder me for my ignorance. And even today, nothing much changed. I’m as ignorant about movies, as I’ve always been. Sowmya should be the ultimate choice when it comes to talking or writing about movies.
Yeah, would love to talk about Ustad with you. Be set to get bored with my lengthy rants.
