Documentary Circle of Hyderabad (DocuCircle) relaunches itself at Lamakaan on the 12th of July, 2011 with a 3-day festival of documentary films.
DocuCircle has been working actively since 2005 to create a vibrant documentary culture in the twin cities by showcasing the fantastic range and variety of documentary films from all over the world.
We started off by organizing a historical and hugely popular 8-day Hyderabad’i’ Documentary and Short Film Festival in March, 2005 which brought together the entire spectrum of documentary films made in the previous four decades by anyone Hyderabad’i’ !
DocuCircle has especially endeavoured to highlight the significant strides made by Indian documentary filmmakers in the last two decades. Anand Patwardhan, Shyam Benegal, Zafar Hai, Amar Kanwar, R.V. Ramani, Sanjay Kak, Paromita Vohra, Samina Mishra, Supriyo Sen, K.P. Sasi, Gautam Sonti, Vipin Vijay and Surabhi Sharma have been among the reputed filmmakers who have visited Hyderabad on the invitation of Docu Circle and interacted with the audiences here.
DocuCircle’s first aim is to clear the general impression about documentaries as dour and boring, merely informational or preachy films. World over, documentaries have been seen as a crucial genre of film-making. And in the last decade, documentary films have gained high popularity as well as commercial success in many countries. The revenues earned by films like Fahrenheit 9/11, Super Size Me, Earth, March of the Penguins, and An Inconvenient Truth has shown that audiences are looking for a gutsy and incisive take on the reality around them.
During the last two years, DocuCircle has been running a regular screening programme (on the 4th Saturday of every month) dedicated to issues of environment and resource politics called POINT of VIEW in association with Alliance Francaise of Hyderabad and Goethe-Zentrum, Hyderabad.
The new monthly event called DOC.SPLASH!will showcase the full range of exciting documentaries : international, Indian and local. The screenings will be followed by lively discussions. Every few months we will also be organizing theme based festivals and retros of classic docus.
DOCUMENTARY CIRCLE OF HYDERABAD will be working in association with Alliance Francaise of Hyderabad, Goethe-Zentrum, Hyderabad, U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad, Great Hyderabad Adventure Club, Navatarangam (a group and their website in Telugu, dedicated to film appreciation and film studies), Lamkaan, and other institutions and organizations for sourcing films and organizing screenings. As also docu filmmakers and film societies from all over the country!
