వీడేంటి? ఫ్లాప్ సినిమా గురించి రాశాడు అని అనుకుంటున్నారు కదూ. నిజమే ఇది ఫ్లాప్ సినిమాయే కాని మరీ అంత తీసి పారేయాల్సిన సినిమా కాదు (ఇది నా అభిప్రాయం). కథ మీ అందరికీ తెలిసిందే అయినా తెలీని వాళ్ళ కోసం రెండు ముక్కల్లో (నిజంగా రెండు ముక్కలే).
తల్లి చనిపోయి, ధనవంతుడైన తండ్రి సరిగ్గా పట్టించుకోని ఓ అనాథ కాని అనాథ కుర్రాడు చిన్న పిల్లలకు కుంగ్ ఫూ నేర్పుతూ తన జీవనాన్ని సాగిస్తూ ఉంటాడు.(మొదటి ముక్క)
ఆ కుర్రాడికి అనుకోకుండా ఓ అమ్మాయితో పరిచయం, అది కాస్త ప్రేమగా మారి పెళ్ళికి దారి తీస్తుంది. తరువాత ఆ అమ్మాయికి లుకేమియా ఉందని తెలిస్తుంది. చావుకి దగ్గరవుతున్న తన భార్యని ఆ కుర్రాడు ఎలా కాపాడుకున్నాడన్నది మొత్తం కథ (ఇది రెండో ముక్క).
చూసారు కదా సారీ చదివారు కదా మరి ఇంత చిన్న కథని మూడు గంటలు తెర మీద చూపిస్తే ఎలా ఉంటుంది? %॓&%$! అలా ఉంటుందన్న మాట.
సాంకేతికంగా చెప్పాలంటే కథనం అదే స్క్రీన్ ప్లే సరిగ్గా లేక సినిమా పోయిందన్న మాట. ఇదే సినిమాని స్క్రీన్ ప్లే కుదురుగా కుదించి రాసుకుని ఓ గంటన్నరలో ముగించి ఉంటే ఫలితం మరోలా ఉండేదేమో?!
పవన్ కళ్యాణ్ సినిమాల్లో అతని నటన చూస్తే అది నటనో? ఫైటో? ఇంకోటో? మరోటో? అర్థం కాక సతమతమవుతున్న రోజులు
అతని డైలాగులు వింటుంటే అవి నవరసాల్లో ఏ రసమో తెలీక జనాలకు నీరసం వస్తున్న రోజులు
తనకున్న బలహీనతలతోనే ఓ స్టైల్ ని సృష్టించి, ఆ స్టైల్ తోనే సినిమాలను హిట్ సినిమాలుగా మలుచుకున్నాడు. తనకంటూ ఓ ఇమేజ్ ని కూడా సృష్టించుకున్నాడు. బావుంది. ఖుషీ సినిమా చూసాక పవన్ చెప్పిన డైలాగ్స్ అతని నోటి నుంచి వచ్చాయా లేక చేతుల ( ఆ సినిమాలో చేతుల్ని అంతలా ఊపుతాడు మరి) నుంచి వచ్చాయా? అని కాలేజ్ కుర్రాళ్ళు తెగ ఇదైపోతున్న తరుణంలో వచ్చింది ఓ ప్రకటన: పవన్ కళ్యాణ్ దర్శకత్వంలో ఓ సినిమా రాబోతున్నది, పేరు జానీ – Johnny.
అసలే పవన్ నటన చూసి బెంబేలెత్తిన మాకు మళ్ళీ ఇదేం పరీక్షరా బాబు అనుకున్నాం.
జానీ విడుదలైంది. మిత్రులతో కలిసి చూసాను.
పవన్ కళ్యాణ్ ని మెచ్చుకోకుండా ఉండలేకపోయాను. బోడి! నీ మెచ్చుకోలు అతనికెందుకోయ్ అంటారా. నిజమే కాని ఈ సినిమా చూడనంతవరకు పవన్ని నానా తిట్లూ తిట్టేవాడిని. మా గ్రూపులో ఉన్న పవన్ కళ్యాణ్ అభిమానుల్ని చీల్చి చెండాడేవాళ్ళం. ఆ ఒక్క సినిమాతో పవన్ కి ఓ మోస్తరు అభిమానిగా మారిపోయా. అకీరా కురసోవా తనకు ఇష్టమైన దర్శకుడు అన్నప్పుడు, వీళ్ళంతా ఇంతే ఎవరో ఓ పెద్ద దర్శకుడి పేరు చెప్పుకుని ఊరికే స్టైల్ కొడుతుంటారు అనుకున్నా, కాని జానీలో షాట్ సెలెక్షన్, ఛాయాగ్రహణం చూశాక పవన్ is different, extremely different అని అర్థం అయ్యింది.
ఈ సినిమాకి ఇద్దరు ఛాయాగ్రాహకులు పని చేసారు. ఒకరు చోటా కె నాయుడు కాగ మరొకరు శ్యామ్ పాలవ్.
ఈ సినిమాలో కథానాయికని అత్యంత సహజంగా చూపించారు. అలాగే కాస్ట్యూమ్స్ డిజైనింగ్ కూడా చాలా బావుంది. కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు ఆంగ్ల చిత్రాల నుంచి కాపీ కొట్టినా చిత్రంలో ఇమిడేట్టుగా చూసుకున్నారు. ఈ చిత్రంలో నాకు బాగా నచ్చినవి మూడు
1. ఛాయాగ్రహణం & లైటింగ్
2. సౌండ్ డిజైనింగ్
3.పవన్ direction in patches.
మొదటి షాట్ నుంచి చివరాఖరి షాట్ వరకు uniform colour grading ని అనుసరించారు. Brownish tint కూడా చిత్ర వాతావరణానికి సరిగ్గా సరిపోయింది. అలాగే లైటింగ్ విషయానికి వస్తే. లైటింగ్ ని ఈ సినిమాలో ఓ character గా ఉపయోగించారు. ముఖ్యంగా పవన్, రేణూని ఓదార్చేటప్పుడు క్రొవ్వొత్తి వెలుతురులో భార్యాభర్తల ఆవేదనని చూపించే సన్నివేశం హృదయానికి హత్తుకుంటుంది. అలాగే పవన్ డబ్బులు కట్టలేదని, రేణూని ఆసుపత్రి నుంచి బయటకి గెంటివేసినట్టుగా కల గనే సన్నివేశంలో కూడా ఛాయాగ్రహణం అలాగే లైటింగ్ రెండూ తమ పాత్రలను అద్భుతంగా పోషించాయి. ఓ వ్యక్తి ఏదైనా జఠిల సమస్యలో ఉన్నప్పుడు, అతని నిద్రలో కూడా sub concious mind
ఆ సమస్య గురించి ఆలోచిస్తూనే ఉంటుంది. దీనినే పవన్ ఆ సన్నివేశంలో చూపించాడు.
ఇక సౌండ్ గురించి చెప్పాలంటే……పతాక సన్నివేశంలో జానీ రుమాలు గాలికి గడ్డి బరకల మీదుగా ఎగురుకుంటూ వెలుతూ ఉంటూంది, అది అలా ఎగురుతున్నప్పుడు వచ్చే సౌండ్……..Excellent sound designing.
అలాగే క్రొవ్వొత్తి ఆరిపోతుంటే పవన్ వచ్చి అడ్డుకునేటప్పుడు, గాలికి అల్లాడుతున్న సన్నటి ఆ అగ్ని ధార నుంచి వచ్చే సౌండ్……..Excellent.
పైన చెప్పిన ప్రతీ సన్నివేశంలో ఆయా సాంకేతిక నిపుణుల సామర్థ్యంతో పాటు దర్శకుడి ప్రతిభ కూడా కొట్టొచ్చినట్టు కనపడుతుంది.
సినిమా ఫ్లాప్ అయింది, అందరూ ఈ సినిమాని ఏకి పారేసారు……..ఒప్పుకుంటా……!
కాని ఒక్కరు కూడా ఈ సినిమా యొక్క సాంకేతిక విలువల గురించి మాట్లాడలేదు.
For me it is a path breaking film and offcourse a cult movie of Tollywood.

నిజంగా మంచి సినిమా. ఒక 2 గంటలకు కుదించి ఉంటే బావుండేది. అలానే ఈ సినిమాను ఒక action సినిమాలాగా project చేసారు adsలో. అలా కాకుండా ఒక simple love story అని చెప్పి ఉంటే బావుండేది అనిపించింది. Anyways, there is one more guy here with me.

He is sincere and realistic about his movies and his performance! He has his own flaws in acting and things, but he does not go gaga about anything! And he’s never unreal in reality!

In the last seven years since this movie released, I met several people who liked it in parts! I liked it so much that I had to argue in support of the movie against none other than a member of the same family that made this film (who even said that it’d fair to be return the ticket price to the audience)!
Another friend of mine had pointed to some other strange observation: that Pawan Kalyan’s hair grows uniformly throughout the film!
I liked the lighting in the first scenes too, before Geetha dies.
And, about the unfortunately heated-up argument in the comments: Su is in a way right, where he says ChaayaagrahaNam (camerawork) and lighthing are aspects of the same thing – yes, and that same thing is called “cinematography” but it seems like he faltered in noticing that he used “cinematography” for “ChaayaagrahaNam”. (This is just a trouble with translation, I’d say.) And, in any case, cinematographers may still employ others (from the Art Department usually) for lighting, AFAIK, in Tollywood. So, talking about lighting and camerawork or even cinematography exclusively is possible (and is thus not like the example that legs walk and the person walks). Peace!

P.S: I told about that “shot continuity” with the protagonist’s hair because continuity is one thing that our makers usually don’t care for. That said, if the director-cum-hero of the film really actually cared for continuity of his own hair throughout the film, that explains the eccentrically extreme level of care he had taken in shaping the film. (Of course, the pace and/or treatment might have marred the final product.)
