ఔత్సాహిక సినిమా దర్శకుడిగా దాదాపు ప్రతి రోజూ నాలాంటి వాళ్ళని ఎంతోమందిని కలుస్తూనే వుంటాను. వారిలో ఇండస్ట్రీలో అసిస్టెంట్ డైరెక్టర్ గా చేరి ఆ తర్వాత కొనాళ్ళకి సినిమా ఛాన్స్ కొట్టేద్దామనుకునే వాళ్ళతో పాటు మనమే స్వంతంగా ఎలాగైన సినిమా తీసి మన టాలెంట్ నిరూపించుకుంటే అవకాశాలు అవే వస్తాయనే వాళ్ళూ ఉన్నారు. అయితే సొంతంగా సినిమా తీయడమంటే మాటలు కాదు. సినిమా తీసేంత డబ్బు అందరి దగ్గరా ఉండాలి కదా!
మన తెలుగులో చూసినట్టయితే సొంతంగా డబ్బులుపెట్టి సినిమా తీసి విజయం సాధించిన వారిలో శేఖర్ కమ్ముల, నగేష్ కూకునుర్, రాధాకృష్ణ జాగర్లమూడి ప్రముఖులు. అయితే ఇలా ఎవరో నిర్మాత దొరికితేనో లేదా మనమే నిర్మాతగా మారితేనో తప్ప సినిమా తియ్యలేమా? సినిమా నిర్మాణానికి మరేదైనా మార్గాలున్నాయా? అనే ప్రశ్నలకు సరైన సమాధానం ఉందనే చెప్పాలి. అదే కో-ఆపరేటివ్ ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్.
కో-ఆపరేటివ్ ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్ ద్వారా సినిమా అనే మాధ్యమాన్ని డబ్బున్న వాళ్ళ చేతుల్లోనుంచి విముక్తి కలిగించాలన్న ధ్యేయంతో 1984 లో కేరళకు చెందిన జాన్ అబ్రహం ’ఒడెస్సా కలెక్టివ్’ అనే సంస్థను స్థాపించాడు. ఈ సంస్థ ద్వారా నిర్మించిన చిత్రమే అమ్మ అరియన్. నేటికీ ఒక కల్ట్ ఫాలోయింగ్ ఉన్న ఈ సినిమా భారతీయ సినీ చరిత్రలో ఒక సంచలనం. కేవలం సినిమా నిర్మాణం మాత్రమే కాకుండా వీధి నాటకాలు, మంచి సినిమా ప్రదర్శనలు లాంటివి కూడా ఒడెస్సా లో భాగమే. అమ్మ అరియన్ సినిమా నిర్మాణం పూర్తయ్యాక ఈ సినిమాని ఊరూరా తిరుగుతూ ఉచితంగా ప్రదర్శించారు. అయితే ఆ తర్వాత కొన్ని రోజులకే ఆయన అకాల మరణంతో ఒడెస్సా కలెక్టివ్ కూడా మరుగునపడిపోయింది.
అయితే జాన్ అబ్రహం ఒడెస్సా కలెక్టివ్ కి పదేళ్ళకి ముందే శ్యామ్ బెనగల్ కో-ఆపరేటివ్ ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్ అసాధ్యం కాదు అని నిరూపించివున్నాడు. గుజరాత్ లోని ఐదు లక్షల మంది రైతుల వద్దనుంచి రెండు రూపాయాల చొప్పున సేకరించగా వచ్చిన పది లక్షల రూపాయాలతో రూపొందించిన చిత్రమే మంథన్. ఈ సినిమా బాక్సాఫీస్ వద్ద కూడా మంచి విజయమే సాధించింది.
ఇలాంటి కొన్ని ఉదాహరణలు తప్పితే కో-ఆపరేటివ్ ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్ ద్వారా పూర్తి స్థాయిలో సినిమా నిర్మాణం జరిగిన ఉదంతాలు తక్కువే అని చెప్పాలి.అయితే సినిమా నిర్మాణానికి ఈ ఐడీయా ఎలా ఉంటుందో చూడండి.
“మీకు ఇప్పుడొస్తున్న సినిమాలు అస్సలు నచ్చటం లేదు. పోనీ మంచి సినిమా నిర్మిద్దామంటే అంతంత డబ్బులు మీ వద్దలేవు. లక్షలు కోట్లు మీ దగ్గరలేవు. కానీ ఒక ఐదొందలు ఉన్నాయా? ఉంటాయి.ఈ రోజుల్లో ఐదొందలంటే ఏముంది. గట్టిగా రెండు బిర్యానీలు కూడా రావు. సో ఆ రెండు బిర్యానీలు మీవి కావనుకుని ఒక ఐదొందలు మాకిస్తే మేము మీకొక మంచి సినిమా నిర్మించి పెడ్తాము.” అని ఎవరైనా అంటే ఇదేదో మన డబ్బులు కొట్టేసే స్కీమ్ అనిపించడంలో ఆశ్చర్యం లేదు. కానీ ఇలా చెప్తున్నవారిలో కె.బాలచందర్, బాలూ మహేంద్ర, మహేంద్రన్ లాంటి ప్రముఖ దర్శకులుంటే అప్పుడేమంటారు?
అవునండీ ఈ మధ్య చెన్నైలో కోలం అనే సంస్థ ద్వారా కో-ఆపరేటివ్ ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్ మరో సారి తెరపైకొచ్చింది. ప్రముఖ తమిళ రచయిత మరియు నాటకరంగ ప్రముఖుడు జ్ఞాని కోలం (ముగ్గు) అనే ఈ సంస్థ రూపకల్పన చేశారు. రెండు వేల మంది సభ్యుల దగ్గరనుంచి ఐదొందల రూపాయల చొప్పున సేకరించగా వచ్చిన డబ్బుతో సినిమా నిర్మాణం చేపట్టి ఆ సినిమాను డివిడి ద్వారా సభ్యులకు అందించడం ఈ సంస్థ లక్ష్యం.

these kind of things always end up just in discussion boards…there are innumerable communities in all kinds of sites where someone proposes a co-op production ..and discussions go on for months and then nothing happens and after some lag someone else starts a discussion…
we dont have that kind of cumulative effort thing working in films here…even if it ever happens…for their share of 500 or 5000 rs everyone tries to criticize story-director-actors…and it ends up like too many cooks …

if you look now…someother members also expressed same problems of all the involved members liking to be director and arguing their script is the best etc…
i havent toiled at all in the socalled telugu film industry…and i do not have any such intentions too..
but i do know that morethan 90%of telugu film industry is filled with people who are in it..for everyother reason than passion for cinema…
and if you call this pessimistic view…i am also telling 10% are true passionate people…
i am just telling whtever reality i know…
i have friends who made films from 10lcs to 30lcs…and few of them are bad and some of them very good..but all ended up becoming nothing more than that..
thats the harsh truth
and there are examples of a couple of directors who impressed star heroes with such attempts..but after making one film in which star heroes sucked all their passion by asking to put item song or spl fight or cut off other characters..and flop is blamed on fault-less ones…
thats what happens here…
but as an optimist…one can always bank upon MIRACLES…
But..putting lakhs of money..hoping for a miracle or careful assessment and making it a marketable option…you got to weigh the option..

We all face 3 problems in becoming “FILM MAKERS’ 1) Right Script, 2) Finances to fund the film making, and 3) Technical knowledge (Know-how) of film making. So my idea is to collectively deal with it and strengthen each other in the process of each one becoming a film maker.
Let’s assume that making a film (1 hour 45 mint film) costs about 10-15 Lakhs, (film and HD-DVD) can any one of us afford to make a film? What if we 35 members put 1 lakh each? That’s the line of thinking I wish to promote. I know it’s not easy but, I am sure it’s worth a try. I am proposing a plan how to go about it and I need your inputs to make it workable.
Step1: People who believe in exploring this possibility would come together and form a group by end of 2009 and the ideal number would be of 25-35 members.
Step2: Register a production house and if any of the members has already registered one, we shall consider joining him/her as partners. Cost for registering a production house and joining as partners needs to be worked out. Possibly each one should contribute up to Rs 10,000/- towards this process.
Step3: Set a time frame of 6 months to write individual film scripts and once the scripts are ready we all shall meet and present each script with the partners. At this time each one should also be ready with 1 lack each. The 1st script that will take the form of film will be selected (elected) democratically. The selected script writer will be the ‘Director’ of the film.
Step4: The selected/elected film will be financed through the pool money. If the Director wants to raise his/her own money in addition to the pool money is free to do so. At this juncture 4 teams will be formed based on the interest and availability of the members.
Team1: Core management team: Organizing and managing the whole partnership needs a core team that can actively plan and keep every one posted and also manage day-to day affaires of the production house and above all financial affairs, this needs at least 3 people and that will be the core management team.
Team 2: Core technical team: This team will actively assist the Director in developing the script in to story board; casting, putting the technical team (cinematographer, music director, production designer etc.) together and will eventually act as Executive producers and assistant directors of the film.
Team 3: Film Promotion team (National): This team as suggested will take care of media publicity initially and promotion of the film to buyers and later on selling of video rights and TV rights of the film. In addition promote the film in Indian film festivals like MIFF, IFFI etc.
Team 4: Film Promotion team (International): This team will do appropriate research about all international film festivals and try secure entry for “our film”. I am sure many of you are aware that even securing entry also is rewarded in many international film festivals. May be all our “abroad” friends can be of great use in carrying out this exercise.
Step5: The film will be produced in 3 months and film festival promotion will be done and commercial release by the same time or according to any alternate plans that can emerge by then.
Step6: All our efforts will be to get back the invested money through this film and put it back in to the next film and the same process starts for the next film from ‘Step3′. This time we need not wait for 6 months for script writing any way.
Idea is to give each one an opportunity to make their film, in partnership with each other.

I think, before attempting a feature length film (90 minutes or more), you folks should try making a couple of shorts (10 min or less). Besides other things, shorts, being what they are, teach aspiring feature film makers how to trim unwanted scenes from scripts. Telling a compelling story in under 10 minutes is no easy task, and the guy who could do that is all set to go for feature films. The best part is – shorts are cheap to produce.

I can see STEP 3 as a big barrier. If it can be crossed smoothly that would be a huge success for co-operative film making. Everybody want to direct and they will get their own vote and here each vote costs 1 lakh. I’d like to add a small suggestion here. How about making a short film (as pointed by Abrakadabra) to show their ability in film making within the budget of 10K. And we can then select the best among them with the help of NT readers. That will finalize the director ( Best script writer may not be a best director). Then script and crew are his/her choice (he/she can use either his/her own script or the best script chosen by others). And that above said short will help to collect money easily.

స్టెప్ 3; స్క్రిప్ట్ రైటర్ నే డైరెక్ట్ర్ గా వుండాలా అన్నది ఆలోచించాల్సిన విషయం. రైటర్ కి దర్శకత్వం చేసే ఆసక్తి లేదా సామర్ధ్యం లేకపోవచ్చు కానీ సామర్ధ్యం ఎవరు నిర్ణయిస్తారు, ఎలా కొలుస్తారు అన్నది ఆలోచించాలి. ఈ రెండిటినీ విడిగా నిర్ణయిస్తే బావుంటుంది. టీములో ఎక్కువమందికి గుర్తింపు వస్తుంది. ప్రజాస్వామ్య బద్ధంగా దర్శకుడిని కూడా ఎన్నుకోవచ్చు.
ఇదివరకే డివిడి ఫిల్ములంటూ ఓ నలభైవేలు (మాత్రమే) తగలేసాను కాబట్టి పదివేల రూపాయాలు అంటే మా ఇంట్లో నాకు అనుమతి దొరక్కపోగా మొట్టికాయాలు దొరకవచ్చు! కానీ చూద్దాం.
ఆబ్రకదబ్ర చెప్పినట్లు – మీరు విభేదించినట్లు 10 నిమిషాల సినిమా కాకపోయినా గంట లోపు సినిమా తీస్తే బావుంటుందేమో. దీనితో నేర్చుకున్న పాఠాలను బట్టి ముందు ముందు నిడివి పెంచవచ్చు.
